A Day at Camp
Ever wondered what it would be like as a summer camp counselor?
This is a possible schedule. It may vary on your camp and how it is ran.
Time to Get Up!
We all get up at different times. Some of us get up around 5-6 depending on
our jobs and if we are a morning person. Some use this early time for showering,
preparing for the day(gathering supplies) or just having a few peaceful minutes
to yourself. You can usually find every one up by 7:30, Even those that love to
hit the snooze mode(and there are many of us that do).
Girls with medications(referred to meds from now on) are done BEFORE breakfast. Flag is right before entering the dining hall.
Kapers for that day might be Flag, hopping, dishes, and singing. (all to be explained later).
After breakfast (usually about 9:15ish), each unit goes their separate ways.
A unit might split up into patrols and have patrol work.
Perhaps Swimming, or canoeing. Perhaps you are doing badge actitivies. or a field
trip might take place Perhaps your group is a riding unit.
Those usually take up a whole morning and before you know it...
Afternoon Nap?
Lunchtime is at 12:30 with lunch meds at 12:15. Lunch kapers are hopping,
dishes, and singing. The afternoon might include any of the activities
above. Perhaps your rest hour/unit meeting will be here, or a the whole unit might work on something.
Perhaps this is the day your trip unit leaves for their trip. Your two hour break might fall here(nap
time if there is time).
Perhaps that night you are having a cookout and so you might need to
teach skill related to that?
Is it Supper Already
Finally suppertime arrives at 6:15 with supper meds at 6:00pm. the day
is almost though. You might have learned about compasses, horses, boating, or pioneers
by now. People are winding down(if you are lucky!)
Suppertime kapers include Flag(takening it down), hopping
,dishes and singing. (see a pattern here?) After supper, there might be
a all camp event. Unit Leaders can get thier unit's mail. Perhaps
more unit things or patrol work. By this time it is about 7:30ish. But
soon it is comes time for
Bedtime!!!
Your day is almost done Or is it?
The girls are put to bed somewhere around 9:30 and 10:30, depending on what
activity you were doing, how long Quiet Meeting lasts, and how long it takes to
get them to bed and queit.(esp after dealing with mice, homesickness and other
possible delays.
Now it is Time (hopefully) for you to settle down and sleep right? Not always.
We try to have activites for us after hours,( relaxation night, games night movie
etc) Curfew is 12 am because if your day is busy like this all time you need your
sleep. This is a great time to read, write those letters you have been meaning to,
gather more materials for the next day, perhaps read up on your subject, work on
secret buddy gifts. and then finally lay down to the sound of mice running on the
tent(quite relaxing after you get used to it.) perhaps the thunder or the rain
or even the horn honking for an all camp sleepover that we all love at 2 am in the
morning.
Well that is a very general overview. As I said above, it might be diferent for your camp.
